extraordinary dividend

A one-time distribution of a dividend, usually in the form of cash or stock, for shareholders that is not likely to be repeated in the future. Also known as a special dividend, extra dividend or bonus dividend.

These usually only are made available when a company has done exceptionally well. A company can issue this type of dividend when it wants to change is debt structure and financing, from more equity-based to more debt-based.
